For
appointment to this grade, a candidate must:
i.
Served
for at least three (3) years in the grade of Mortician II;
ii.
Be
a member of a registered funeral professional association;
iii.
Must
have attended seminars, workshops, CPD or conferences in relation to funeral
industry;
iv.
Proficiency
in computer applications.
v.
Show
merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
Duties
and Responsibilities
i.
Receiving
bodies and preparing them for embalming, washing and disinfecting bodies to
prevent deterioration and infection;
ii.
The
officer will embalm the bodies and completing the necessary paper work
required;
iii.
Duties
will involve proper storage of human remains, making sure the mortuary is fully
stocked, restoring the appearance of bodies.
iv.
Also
they will work closely with funeral arrangers to make sure the families' wishes
are met.
v.
Receiving
bodies and placing them into cold storage unit;
vi.
Standing
by at the post-mortem operation and passing instruments such as scalpels to the
pathologist, cleaning and sterilizing all instruments;
vii.
The
Mortician I will be weighing each organ as the pathologist removes it and
taking samples for toxicology and histopathology analysis, afterwards helping
replace all the organs in the body, embalming, reconstructing, stitching up and
cleaning the body.
viii.
Keeping
accurate computer records of the identity of the body, ensuring a high standard
of presentation of the body following post mortem, so that the body is suitable
for viewing;
ix.
Liaising
with doctors, police and funeral directors;
x.
Assisting
with documents for death certificates;
xi.
Taking
out the bodies for relatives to view and perhaps identify and giving them
information and support.
xii.
Keeping
the mortuary clean and enforcing health and safety regulations;
xiii.
The
officer will participate in the supervision and counselling of staff and
students attached to funeral home.
