PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT ANIMAL HEALTH OFFICER

Job Requirements

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

     i.        Served in the grade of Chief Animal Health Officer for a minimum period of three (3) years;

   ii.        Diploma in any of the following disciplines: - Animal Health, Animal Health and Production, Environmental Health, Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Diagnosis, Poultry Science, Veterinary Public Health and Meat Technology or Animal Husbandry from a recognized institution;

  iii.        Certificate in Senior Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;

  iv.        Registered by the Kenya Veterinary Board;

    v.        Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution; and

  vi.        Demonstrated merit and shown ability in work performance and results.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

     i.        Advising and managing design, siting, construction;

   ii.        Inspecting and verifying of imports and export consignments

  iii.        Managing of veterinary farms;

  iv.        Ensuring maintenance of cold chain facilities;

    v.        Maintaining quarantine status in quarantine stations and holding grounds;

  vi.        Coordinating farmers training on milking techniques and external parasite control techniques;

 vii.        Leading large vaccination teams;

viii.        Carrying out simple treatment of animals;

  ix.        Participating in disease research, collecting and collating data on animal health and breeding;

    x.        Keeping records on animal breeding, animal health, milk production, dipping data, slaughterhouse daily kill, meat condemnation and movement permits; and

  xi.        Organizing animal health field demonstrations and agricultural shows;

xii.        Supervising equipment sterilizations, sample collection, packaging and dispatch;

xiii.        Inspecting livestock routes;

xiv.        Issuing of livestock stock routes;

 xv.        Issuing of livestock movement permits;

xvi.        Coordinating artificial insemination, meat inspection and grading;

xvii.        Enforcing slaughterhouse hygiene and meat transport regulations and inspection of retail outlets of foods of animal origin; and

xviii.        Advising in construction and maintenance of farm structures and implementing uptake of new technologies in animal health to stakeholders.
