ASSISTANT DIRECTOR ANIMAL HEALTH

Job Requirements

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

          i.            Served in the grade of Principal Animal Health Officer for a minimum period of three (3) years;

        ii.            Bachelor in any of the following disciplines: Animal Health and Management; Animal Health and Production management, Animal Production, Environmental Health, Livestock Economics or Health Extension from recognized institution;

      iii.            Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines: - Animal Production, Animal Breeding, Animal Nutrition and Feed Sciences, Environmental Science, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, Poultry Science, Apiary Science, Aquatic Science or Wildlife Health and Management from a recognized institution;

       iv.            Have a certificate in Senior Management Course lasting not less than four weeks from recognized institution;

        v.            Be registered by the Kenya Veterinary Board.

       vi.            Have a Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution; and

     vii.            Have demonstrated a high degree of professional competence, administrative capabilities in initiating and implementing animal health services.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Advising and managing dip designing, sitting and appraising construction;
  2. Inspection and verification of imports and export of consignments;
  3. Managing veterinary farms, cold chain facilities and quarantine status in quarantine stations holding grounds;
  4. Planning training farmers on milking techniques;
  5. Leading big vaccination teams;
  6. Carrying out simple treatment of animals;
  7. Participating in disease search, collecting, collating, analyzing data and writing technical reports;
  8. Keeping records on animal breeding, animal health, milk production, dipping data, slaughter house daily kill, meat condemnation and movement permits;
  9. organizing animal health field demonstrations and agricultural shows.
  10. Managing sample collection, packaging and dispatch, livestock routes;
  11. Issuing of livestock movement permit, managing artificial insemination services, meat inspection and grading;
  12. Enforcing slaughter house hygiene and meat transport regulations and inspection of retail outlets of food of animal origin;
  13. Participating in construction and maintenance of farm structures; and
  14. Coordinating uptake of new technologies in animal health to stake holders.
